Does my homeowners insurance cover a dog bite?

I recently read that President Biden’s dog Major, once again bit a White House staff member. This news has provoked a question I believe many dog owners may have. Does my homeowner’s or renter’s insurance cover my dog biting someone? With help from one of our Producers, Kyle, we have the answer.

Liability Coverage

More times than not, homeowners or renters won’t outright say dog bites are covered. But fear not, such events would be protected under the liability section. If your dog bites someone and you are found liable in court, your insurance will pay for the victims’ medical payments and any legal expenses you may incur. It is always good to double-check with your local agent as some insurance companies may have exclusions.

What about breed restrictions?

It is not uncommon for an insurance company to have a list of breed restrictions. In the event, you own one of the dogs on this list and it bites someone you will not be covered. For example, Travelers, one of our companies excludes Akita, Alaskan Malamute, American Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bullmastiff, Chow Chow, Doberman Pinscher, Pit Bull, Presa Canario, Rottweiler, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Any Wolf Hybrid or any mix of these breeds.

Renters Coverage

Just like a homeowner’s policy, renters’ policies can cover a dog bite under liability and medical payment coverages. It is important to check with your landlord to see if they have any breed restrictions as well as your insurance company before getting a dog.
